JUBILEE TRACK EXTENSION
Fully open Our 320 metre long Jubilee extension opened on the 4th June 2012, so giving a longer ride on every Public Open Day.
Work on Phase 1 of the track extension in the adjacent field to the South West of our existing site started in the 2011 Summer.
The excavation of the new track bed progressed well. The top soil which varies in depth to between 150 mm and 600 mm was removed down to the chalk layer. Following this tanalised edging boards were fixed either side of the track bed. Once the edge boards were fixed we then filled any low parts with chalk. We had 30 tons of chalk delivered from a local site that was excavating it for a house. There was then a weed suppressant sheet laid over the chalk and the track ballast placed on top of this.
We cleared a lot of brambles and dead wood from the copse at the far end and we will keep this as a wooded area that the track will run through.
There are some mature trees on the site and the track passes fairly close to them. So as not to disturb their roots we built low level bridges across the root areas, with embankments up to them.
In early 2012 work continued on landscaping along the sides of the track. The first section of the new track was laid on 30th January. We have used sleepers made from recycled plastic and routed shallow groves at an angle to fit the track profile.
